What are Public Access areas?
The Public Access areas overlay shows land that has recognised public access rights, based on data from Herenga ā Nuku (the Outdoor Access Commission) and other official sources.
It isn't a complete map of everywhere you can legally visit.
Many trails and peaks in Wild Things pass through or are located on land that doesn't appear in this overlay, including:
Forestry land where public access is permitted.
Towns and urban parks.
Private land with landowner permission.
Areas managed under other access arrangements.
Using the Public Access overlay

The Public Access overlay can be turned on from the Overlays menu on New Zealand maps.
You can adjust the overlay transparency so you can see both the map and the public access data at the same time. The overlay is designed to help you understand where public access land exists, not determine whether a trail or peak is accessible.
Always refer to the trail or peak page for access notes, permissions and any restrictions.
